By the way, I will not use the other Acronym, ISIS, for this group, as it would be an insult to the image of Isis, the ancient Egyptian Goddess who became the most revered figure in the Mediterranean.
ISIL is rapidly setting up shop as a governing force in parts of Iraq, and holds considerable territory in Syria. Similar fighters are beginning to attack Lebanon. Their goal is the re-create a central, far right-wing extremist Muslim Caliphate in the Middle East. Not only do they themselves hold an extremist view of Islam, they are killing any others (Christians, Yazidis, Shi’a Muslims, you name it) if they do not convert to their form of Islam.
This post is not about using military force against ISIL. That is another issue, and I am not going there in this post. I recommend is Sri Aurobindo’s commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, which is wonderful in its entirety. Verbum Sapienti Satis est. A Word to the Wise is Sufficient.
Certainly we must give humanitarian help to the Kurds, who are the best hope for sheltering the refugee Christians, Shi’a Muslims, Yezidis (who are Kurds themselves) and others fleeing ISIL. The Kurds are a civilized and generally enlightened culture, and accept diversity in their society.
But here, I am talking about getting to the root causes for ISIL. No movement comes from nowhere. Just as the Anti-American fake “grassroots” group the Tea Party (an Astroturf group) is not grassroots at all, but was created from whole-cloth by the insidious Koch Brothers and their ilk, ISIL was created and is bankrolled by someone who is remaining secret. Watch The Koch Brothers Exposed to find about about that evil plaguing the US and the World.
We supposedly have the most sophisticated Intelligence Operations in the world. As we have learned in the last few years, we are very good indeed at spying on our own people, and on our friends.
So why can’t we reveal the origins and backers of ISIL? We can trace their rise through various organizations, and we know that they have vast resources looted from Syria and Iraq. The Iraqi resources are US money and US arms, including M-1 Tanks. However, they are too well-organized, too fierce, too efficient, and have too much military expertise to be explained by just these two sources.
I believe that they have a State backer. I think our intelligence knows who it is. If it were Russia, China, or someone like that, the news would be broken immediately.
If you recall a post two years ago, we discussed the principle of Cui Bono. Whom does (it) benefit? Let’s apply that here. What nation-state sponsors of ISIL would the United States Government want to protect, even if the CIA and NSA knew who they were?
A drug addict desperately protects his/her dealer. What are we addicted to as a Nation? Well, there are actually a whole lot of answers to that, but the biggest addiction is Fossil Fuels. So, the culprit is probably an oil and/or gas producer. I doubt seriously that it is Venezuela, we don’t talk to them anyway.
Another clue: ISIL is an extremist far-right perversion of Islam. Of Sunni Islam. Hmmm! Wahabism is a right-wing perversion of Sunni Islam. Where are there Wahabis in Fossil Fuel producing Countries? Here’s Wikipedia’s demographic report:
“One of the more detailed estimates of religious population in the Persian Gulf is by Michael Mehrdad Izady who estimates, “using cultural and not confessional criteria,” only than 4.56 million Wahhabis in the Persian Gulf region, about 4 million from Saudi Arabia, (mostly the Najd), and the rest coming overwhelmingly from the Emirates and Qatar. Most Sunni Qataris are Wahhabis (46.87% of all Qataris) and 44.8% of Emiratis are Wahhabis. 5.7% of Bahrainis are Wahhabis and 2.17% of Kuwaitis are Wahhabis.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahabi#Population.
These countries are generally rich, and conservative. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf States have long been supporters of Hamas. Iran was too for a while, but they have soured on Hamas since they didn’t support Syria’s Assad, Iran’s friend. Plus, their style of Islam, while controlling, is not Right-Wing. Iran is generally a progressive society except for its clerical leadership.
I don’t have a “smoking gun,” but I would lay dollars to donuts that it is one or more of the Gulf States that is betraying their fellow Muslims and backing ISIL. My personal favorites are Saudi Arabia or Qatar, but I can’t prove that.
What can we do about this?
1. Break the hold that the Fossil Fuel Industry (ah, the Koch Brothers again!) has on us and the rest of the Industrialized World. Make Green, Renewable, Sustainable Energy the A-#1 Goal: the target in 10 years. Completely stop buying Oil and Gas from States that disrupt the world. Energy Independence Now, not just for us, but for the developing world as well.
2. Reveal who the State Sponsor(s) of ISIL are and completely isolate them from the rest of the world. Seize all of their assets outside of their own countries.
3. I call on all Peace-loving Muslims of all groups (and there are many, I know a lot of them!) to denounce loudly, publicly, and repeatedly ISIL, Hamas, al-Qaeda and all who pervert the noble Path of Islam for their own purposes.
4. I call on all Peace-loving Christians worldwide of all Churches (and I certainly know there are a lot of them) to denounce loudly, publicly, and repeatedly the nutty right-wing of Christianity and all who pervert the noble Path of Christ for their own purposes of hatred and division.
5. For those of us in democratic countries, only vote for officials and representatives of any party who promise, and deliver on, Green, Renewable, Sustainable Energy now. Time to get all money out of politics. We can work on other issues later. From an Environmental and Societal viewpoint, we must stop this now.
And let’s not forget who set the stage for the disastrous situation of the Middle East:
A. The Ottoman Turks, with their decadent and inept administration of the region from 1453-1917.
B. France, Britain, and Imperial Russia, who broke the promises of T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) after World War I and signed the Sykes-Picot pact dividing up the region instead of sealing Arab independence as had been agreed.
C. The United States and the other Allies, who, after the Bolsheviks revealed the secret agreement in 1917, stood by and allowed France and Britain to continue to dominate the region.
Μὴ πλανᾶσθε, Θεὸς οὐ μυκτηρίζεται. ὃ γὰρ ἐὰν σπείρῃ ἄνθρωπος, τοῦτο καὶ θερίσει·
Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. — Galatians 6:7
This has come down to us in the languages of the WWI allies who betrayed the promises of Lawrence of Arabia to the Arabs:
You reap what you sow.
On récolte ce que l’on sème.
что посеешь, то и пожнёшь (što poséješ, to i požnjóš)
…and in Turkish:
İnsan ne ekerse onu biçer.
We, the Turks, Europe, et al. created this mess. We must fix it. Pottery Barn Rules: You Break it, You Own it.
